REACH PROJECT (Researching Executive Law & Advocating for Constitutional Human Rights)
Under the REACH Project, Benton and Johnson aim to bring about systemic changes by understanding the community's needs and researching criminal and civil executive laws at the county, state, and federal levels. This research will help identify the laws that directly affect citizens' daily lives in relation to police brutality. With a focus on exercising constitutional human rights, REACH aims to empower individuals and communities to hold accountable those responsible for violating these rights. By providing information and resources, they will assist affected communities in navigating the legal system and seeking justice.
Through their efforts, Benton and Johnson are working towards creating a more just and accountable society, where systemic change can be achieved by addressing the issues surrounding police brutality and advocating for constitutional human rights.
The Accountability Project is a research project that began after the tragic death of Xzavier Hill at the hands of the Virginia State Police and motivated his family to fight for justice. However, they faced difficulties in finding an attorney willing to take on the case, leading them to take matters into their own hands.
Xzavier's mother demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience by conducting extensive research on Virginia law and filing a civil complaint pro se, representing herself in the legal process. This highlights the challenges faced by families seeking justice and the need for support and guidance in navigating the legal system.
The creation of the REACH Project will provide invaluable assistance to families like Xzavier's who are facing similar struggles. By offering guidance and resources, REACH can help families understand the complexities of the legal system and determine what justice and accountability may look like in their specific cases.
It is disheartening to hear that families often believe the lack of indictment signifies the end of their pursuit of justice. However, as demonstrated in cases such as Ruben Urbina, where the initial decision not to indict was later overturned upon further investigation, it emphasizes the importance of persistence and representation.
The REACH Project will work to empower families, provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge, and ensure that they have access to proper legal representation. By shedding light on the complexities of the legal system and offering support, these initiatives will help families in the pursuit of justice and accountability effectively
